9/11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride

A group of UK Firefighters will be travelling to the USA in September to take part in the 10th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride. The group will accompany firefighters, police officers and other service personnel from across the USA, leaving Chicago’s Sox Park at 09:11hrs on September 6th on a four night journey visiting each of the sites of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and arriving in New York to take part in the commemorations on September 11th.

The group of 34 consists of serving and retired firefighters from Hertfordshire, London, Central Scotland, Strathclyde, North Wales, West & South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, East Sussex, Essex and Luton Airport. There is also a Police Officer from Sussex and a Highways Agency Traffic Officer in the group.

The trip, an annual event, see’s the group travel from Chicago to New York via Youngstown, Shanksville, Gettysburg and Washington and was the brainchild of Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Tom Maloney who spent several weeks in the aftermath of 9/11 searching for victims of the attacks on the twin towers.

Lt. Maloney wanted to create a memorial to the 343 firefighters that lost their lives that day and, with a group of friends, he undertook the ride for the first time in 2002. The ride has taken place every year since, growing to the hundreds of motorcycles taking part this year and it has brought about the forming of the American Firefighters Motorcycle Club which now has chapters across the USA.

Hertfordshire Firefighters Peter Cowland and Tony Smith took part in the 2007 and 2009 rides, returning to the UK to form the British Firefighters Motorcycle Club and begin planning the 10th Anniversary trip.

The pair said, ‘We are so pleased that so many wanted to come with us this year and it has been an absolute pleasure planning this trip. We are looking forward to seeing all our American friends again and supporting them on what will be an emotional journey”.

‘We want them to know that they are not alone and that we share their grief and anguish at what happened on 9/11 but we are determined to keep this really positive event going because terrorists will never be able to take away the comradeship we share in the Fire Service and across all the services that keep us safe”.
